Ice breaker: Layoff leads Bolm to create snow removal, restaurant, winery conglomerate
Entrepreneur Carl Bolm has long been a man for all seasons.
In 1984, Bolm landed a job with Ozark Air Lines, then once winter arrived, he was temporarily laid off. At the time, Bolm was 24 and sharing a four-bedroom house in Bridgeton with three other airline employees. With no income for the winter, Bolm got busy, clearing snow from homeowners’ driveways and sidewalks. It was a bare-bones operation: just Bolm, a shovel and a used snow plow, mounted to his pickup truck.
That was the beginning of BSR Services Inc., Bolm’s snow and ice removal company, now based in Maryland Heights — and it was the first of several entrepreneurial endeavors that Bolm, now 53, would ultimately undertake.
